* A hard-driving birdwatcher may see upwards of 300 bird species
in New England. * New England boasts a wide variety of birds because of the region's varied habitat: shoreline, marsh,
lakes, fields, woods (deciduous forest, boreal forest), urban centers, suburbs. * Many species _ such as northern cardinals,
northern mockingbirds and tufted titmice _ are relatively new to New England, having worked their way north over the
last several decades. * Some species _ such as Carolina wren and red-bellied woodpeckers _ are increasing their range
northward into the middle section of New England. Both species are already common in southern New England.
