Here’s my latest For the Birds column that appeared in last week’s The Hour (Norwalk, Ct) and this week’s The Keene (N.H.) Sentinel. It is about the northward movement of the territory of the Red-bellied Woodpecker, a large and handsome woodpecker that has been common in southern New England but scarce in middle New England. That seems to be changing.

  1. Thank you for the interesting article on Red-bellied woodpeckers. We live in Winchester off of Route 119 East. We have had a Red-bellied woodpecker at our feeder for the last 2 months. What a beauty! I have just started bird watching and was not aware of what an honored guest we have at our home. The birds have been going crazy with the suet and the bird seeds. I love to watch them!!! Thank you again.

  2. I live in Spofford, NH and have had visits by Red-bellied woodpeckers for the past three years. Two years ago it was a very occasional sighting, last year and so far this year I have seen one at my feeders on a very regular, almost daily basis. I have a friend in Keene and she has one at her feeder almost every morning.

    I have a a lone blue bird in my yard the past two mornings eating the berries that have fallen off a fringe tree. Last week the same tree was full of robins and cedar waxwings.

    Red-bellied woodpecker at my feeder eating sunflowers and just switched over to the suet feeder. I have never seen this woodpecker at my feeders before, but I read that they are moving north. I did a double take when I saw him, very striking colors.
