Here’s a nice male Hooded Merganser I spotted at a pond in Danbury, Conn., on the second-to-last day of 2016. Goodbye 2016. Let’s see what 2017 brings us.

New bird watcher here, just learning. There was a magical flock of about 20 little ducks on the reservoir in Brookline MA the past few days – with white on the sides of their heads. Something so magical about the way they would one by one make a little flip and disappear, diving into the water. Suddenly the whole flock would be gone for about 10 seconds then one by one appear again. With naked eye we actually thought one side of he head was white and the other brown — but of course it was the males and the females. When I brought my camera and zoomed in I could see them more clearly and yes you know – – -hooded mergansers. Just had to share how happy I felt to have identified them but even more just to see them! So cute and lovely.
