With the all the color in the bird world passing through these days in the form of warblers, orioles, tanagers, grosbeaks and buntings, it can be easy to forget about our ‘ordinary’ colorful birds, such as cardinals.
Yes, even the female Northern Cardinal is beautifully colorful — just not as striking as the brilliant red male. So here’s a shot of one of these pretty ladies — really nothing ordinary about her.

I’m just back from a week at the family place in New Hampshire. I’m pleased to say that I bought the Monday Keene Sentinel while there, just to read your column!
My cousin has a bird feeder, so I could have my breakfast of an amazingly good fresh egg & watch birds — hummingbirds, goldfinches, tufted titmice & lots more. They also have a barn where myriad swallows live. I actually got to watch swallows mating several times. A first for me & so interesting. Best Susan
