Eastern Phoebes are early migrant arrivals, showing up in early March to New England. This one visited the bath in mid-March.

  1. Hi Chris — I just tried to type a message into the comment space, but it disappeared. I hope this will reach you. I want to tell you the last part of the story of the pair of house finches I wrote you about in a comment in early June. Well, I had dinner with them yesterday! I was invited to a Fourth of July dinner by neighbors who also live on the top floor of my building on the Upper West Side. They have a garden deck, much more elaborate than mine. In fact it is like a Garden of Eden, it is so full of plants, flowers & herbs — I wish you could see & photograph it. The pair of house finches that I had seen in spring looking for a comfortable home found one in a thick tangle of clematis vine on my friends’ deck. They were flying in & out all evening as we ate, singing & conversing with each other. And inside the tangle of greenery we could hear chirping. Not only that, but the salad was made with things my friends raised on their deck. I’m lucky to have such wonderful neighbors& friends. I enjoy your column & photos very much indeed, Susan
